The popular film programme Around the World on Wednesdays, organized by the Fortress of Culture Šibenik, is held again this summer at the Barone Fortress. During ten movie nights at the top of the city, programme brings the best of domestic and world cinematography.
This year's fourth edition of the summer movie nights under the stars was created in collaboration with festivals that are among the most important promoters of independent and artistic films in Croatia. The selectors from Zagreb’s Kino Europa and from the Zagreb, Motovun and Subversive Film Festival will for this occasion pick out the latest independent titles from all over the world, only for the Šibenik’s audience. The selected movies marked, or are yet to mark the current programs of prestigious film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Sundance or Sarajevo.
Alongside the special selection, most Around the World on Wednesdays projections will be accompanied by the guest appearance of film directors, selectors, actors and critics. Through conversations, they will present the selected titles to the audience.
Wednesdays around the World movie nights will start on June 26 with the screening of Icelandic eco-terroristic action comedy and a festival hit by the renowned film eccentric, director Benedict Erlingsson, Woman at War. Voted as the best movie by the audience of the last years Zagreb Film Festival, it came from one small, but powerful cinematography, like the Icelandic, and much like this year's program on Barone Fortress
The start of the film program at Barone Fortess, which will last until the beginning of September, will be marked by the guest appearances of the director and the producer of the Zagreb Film Festival, Boris T. Matić and Lana Matić, who are also the heads of the Kino Europa. In the collaboration with the programme coordinator Selma Mehadžić they will choose titles from the repertoire of Kino Europa, the Zagreb Film Festival (ZFF) and the children’s festival KinoKino.
In July the premiere of the latest film by the famous Italian Oscar-winner Paolo Sorrentino, Loro is expected. Declared by the critics the wildest movie in Sorrentino’s cinematography so far, the film tells the story of a group of businessmen and ambitious politicians who, from 2006 to 2010, were the entourage of the media tycoon and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. At Barone Fortress is coming straight from the programme of ZFF.
In addition to the representative film from the program of the forthcoming 22nd Motovun Film Festival (MFF), which will be chosen for this occasion by its selector and film critic Jurica Pavičić, the program of the MFF will also be featured through the projection of the movie Srbenka. The film was the winner of the Doc Alliance Award at Cannes, and in Šibenik it will be presented by its director Nebojša Slijepčević.
Subversive Film Festival will be showcased by Ash Is Purest White, the latest achievement by the Chinese cult filmmaker Jia Zhangke, who is the leading figure of the Sixth Generation Chineese Cinema.
At the beginning of August, under the subprogram What do the children of Šibenik do? The Load, movie by the director Ognjen Glavonić will be showcased. The film was the winner of the last years ZFF, and will be presented by a leading actor Leon Lučev, who is originally from Šibenik.
