Sustainable Future of Cultural Heritage Through Green Management Practices
New GIFTSnet Workshop at St. John’s Fortress
How can cultural institutions reduce their carbon footprint, use resources more efficiently, and develop sustainable models for managing heritage? Answers to these questions will be offered at a new three‑day workshop organised within the GIFTSnet project, taking place at the St. John’s Fortress Campus.
The Public Institution Fortress of Culture Šibenik continues its educational programmes focused on sustainable cultural heritage management. As part of the GIFTSnet project, a workshop dedicated to green public procurement, energy efficiency, and carbon footprint measurement in cultural institutions will be held at St. John’s Fortress from 23 to 25 March 2026.
Over the course of three days, participants will explore how sustainability principles can be transformed into practical management tools within cultural organisations and heritage sites, through lectures, group work, and real‑world examples.
From Ideas to Practical Tools
The workshop programme focuses on practical methods that can help institutions systematically introduce sustainable practices into their operations. Participants will learn about the basics of green public procurement, methods for analysing and reducing carbon footprints, and opportunities for improving the energy efficiency of cultural facilities.
The workshop will be led by Laura Orlić (Artivist Company), an expert in sustainable management and the implementation of green practices in the cultural and public sectors. Through lectures, group work, and case studies, participants will explore how sustainability principles can be integrated into the everyday management of cultural institutions and heritage locations.
The emphasis is on hands‑on work and exchange of experience, with the aim of developing concrete approaches that organisations can apply in their daily operations.
Heritage as a Learning Space
The workshop also includes a fieldwork component, allowing participants to examine the challenges of sustainable cultural heritage management in the real setting of a historic city. This combination of theory and practice is a key objective of the educational activities the Fortress of Culture implements through international projects.
Education Through the GIFTSnet Project
The workshop is organised as part of the GIFTSnet – Network for Green and Inclusive Fortified Tourism Solutions project, funded through the Interreg VI‑A IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027 programme. Educational workshops such as this one are part of project activities aimed at strengthening the capacities of cultural institutions and stakeholders in the field of sustainable cultural heritage and tourism management.
The project connects partners from Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro in developing sustainable models for managing cultural heritage and tourism. It runs for 30 months, from 15 September 2024 to 14 March 2027, with a total budget of EUR 2,244,442.80.
Alongside the Fortress of Culture Šibenik as the lead partner, project partners include the City of Banja Luka and the Museum of Herzegovina Trebinje from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the City of Karlovac from Croatia, and the Municipalities of Bar and Ulcinj from Montenegro.
The GIFTSnet project contributes to sustainable and inclusive cultural tourism development through investments in seven cultural sites – in Šibenik, Karlovac, Banja Luka, Trebinje, Bar, and Ulcinj – as well as through the development of inclusive tourism products and capacity‑building activities for stakeholders in sustainable cultural tourism.
