One of the most prominent guitarists in contemporary jazz, Julian Lage, will make his Croatian debut on July 13 at Barone Fortress in Šibenik.
The guitar virtuoso will be joined by double bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Joey Baron, who has collaborated with artists such as David Bowie. The Julian Lage Trio is currently on a European tour, and they are the headline act of this year’s third edition of the Barone Jazz Festival, arriving just after their performance at the prestigious North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam.
Described by The New York Times as one of the “brightest musical minds of his generation,” Lage began playing at an early age and was immediately recognized as a child prodigy. His musical education is notable—he studied classical music and composition at the San Francisco Conservatory, and graduated from the world-renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston.
He has worked with jazz greats such as Gary Burton, John Zorn, Nels Cline, and Bill Frisell, and has earned seven Grammy nominations, including one for his latest 2024 album, "Speak to Me", which marks his fourth release under the Blue Note Records label. Several of the album’s 14 tracks, through which Lage intuitively yet technically flawlessly explores the American musical tradition—from jazz and blues to folk and gospel—will be performed during his debut appearance in Šibenik, organized by Šibenik Fortress of Culture.
