Yugo Goes to America
Yugo Goes to America
dir. Filip Grujić, Aleksa Borković; Serbia, Croatia; 2026; 87 min
Once a flagship export of Yugoslav industry, later the subject of American ridicule, and today a cult relic of a vanished world, the Yugo is crossing the Atlantic once again. Filip Grujić and Aleksa Borković set out from New York to Los Angeles in the car that was supposed to conquer Reagan’s America in the 1980s but instead became a global joke on four wheels—or three and a half, depending on the condition of the road.
Blending documentary comedy with the road movie format, Yugo Goes to America follows a journey across 23 states and more than 10,000 kilometres in search of the traces of an unlikely encounter between small-scale socialist production and the vast capitalist marketplace. Through breakdowns, chance encounters, archival footage, and unexpected enthusiasts, the film becomes a portrait of a generation inheriting symbols it did not create but must somehow learn to understand.
The film had its world premiere at CPH in the Special Premieres programme and opened the 19th edition of Beldocs in Belgrade, where it won the Audience Award for Best European Documentary.
