Yellow Letters

Yellow Letters

dir. İlker Çatak; Germany, France, Turkey; 2026; 127 min

Winner of the Golden Bear at the 2026 Berlinale, the latest film by İlker Çatak, director of The Teachers’ Lounge, is a political drama about two artists who suddenly find themselves targeted by the system. At its centre are Derya and Aziz, an actor-director couple whose professional and personal lives begin to unravel under the pressure of political repression as it seeps from the public sphere ever deeper into intimacy, marriage, and family life.

As in his previous work, Çatak remains focused on the mechanisms of power, fear, and conformity, but rather than treating them as abstract political concepts, he portrays them as forces that shape everyday existence. Yellow Letters is a film about the moment when public repression becomes a personal reality—a portrait of a society in which insecurity, self-censorship, and pressure no longer stop at institutions but enter the home, relationships, and the body itself.
