dir. Alauda Ruiz de Azúa; Spain, France; 2025; 115 min
The captivating new feature from one of the most compelling emerging voices in Spanish cinema, writer-director Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, is a finely observed family drama that offers layered perspectives and complex conclusions. Its protagonist, seventeen-year-old Ainara, finds herself at a crossroads: she must decide what path to pursue at university. Although higher education is what her family expects of her, Ainara senses that her future may lie elsewhere. While her friends experience the joys and upheavals of adolescence—falling in love, going out, and embracing newfound freedoms—she feels a profound calling towards the contemplative life of a nun. The choice before her will not be an easy one and threatens to unsettle the delicate balance within her family.
Following its success in Spanish cinemas, this intriguing drama won five Goya Awards, including Best Film, and was honoured with the Golden Shell for Best Film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Ruiz de Azúa’s feature debut, Lullaby (2022), was hailed by Pedro Almodóvar as the finest Spanish film debut of recent years.
