Pula on Tour: Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day
dir. Ivona Juka; Croatia; 2024; 137 min
Croatia’s submission for the Academy Awards last year and one of the titles featured in the main programme of this year’s Pula Film Festival, Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day is set in 1950s Yugoslavia. Four friends—renowned filmmakers and World War II veterans Lovro, Nenad, Stevan and Ivan—come under suspicion for homosexuality. Emir, a loyal Communist Party operative, is assigned to sabotage their careers and personal lives. As the search for freedom turns into a struggle for survival, Emir gradually begins to question his own convictions.
Ivona Juka’s previous feature film, You Carry Me (2015), was also Croatia’s Academy Awards submission and became the first Croatian film acquired by Netflix for worldwide distribution. Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day premiered at the Warsaw International Film Festival. The film stars Dado Ćosić, Emir Hadžihafizbegović, Slaven Došlo, Đorđe Galić and Elmir Krivalić in the leading roles.
