Biti u rodu s Johnom Malkovichem - with the attendance of the director

What happens when a family legend about a possible kinship with John Malkovich becomes the catalyst for a long-postponed conversation? Luka Mavretić’s feature documentary debut begins as an unusual search for a Hollywood relative, but soon evolves into an intimate film about a father and son, inheritance, and family memory. After becoming a parent himself, Luka decides to work on his relationship with his father, and the investigation of a family myth becomes a way to uncover long-buried issues. Through the intersection of family archives, personal filmmaking, and the quest for a famous surname, Being Related to John Malkovich explores family, identity, heritage, and the need to make sense of one’s own story despite stubbornly entrenched family versions of the truth.

The film is a Croatian–Italian–Bulgarian co-production produced by 4Film. It is directed by Luka Mavretić, with a screenplay by Luka and Valentina Mavretić. The cinematography is by Marinko Marinkić, editing by Ivor Šonje, and the producer is Anita Juka. The film had its world premiere at the 65th Krakow Film Festival in the Family Revolutions programme.

Director Luka Mavretić will attend the screening and share further insights into the film during a post-screening discussion.
