Homage Collective plays Sade

Homage Collective will open the new edition of the Barone Jazz Festival on Saturday, June 27. This Zagreb-based music collective, founded in 2022, is known for its “Homage Collective plays…” concept, in which thematic concerts reinterpret the work of major international and regional artists. At Barone Fortress, they will perform their project “Homage Collective plays Sade.”

The project is a tribute to Nigerian-British musician Sade Adu, whose musical expression is defined by refined style, elegance, and remarkable emotional depth. Her music is timeless, and the decades that have passed since some of her greatest songs only confirm the quality and uniqueness of her work. [sound-report.com]

The project was informally initiated by Davor Doležal and Antonio Žuža with the idea of creating a live, orchestrated musical experience that combines respect for the original material with their own arrangements and performance approach.

The collective consists of an extended ensemble including a rhythm section, drums (Janko Novoselić, Mirsad Dalipi, Marko Lazarić), bass guitar (Robert Vrbančić, Zvonimir Šestak, Mario Torbica), keyboards (Nikola Šantek, Hrvoje Galler, Joe Kaplowitz), guitar (Davor Doležal), percussion (Borna Šercar, Boris Popov), and a rich horn section—trumpet (Zvonimir Bajević, Antonio Geček), saxophone (Vojkan Jocić, Mario Bočić, Oliver Ereš), trombone (Hrvoje Štefanić, Jurica Rukljić), flute (Mihael Gyorek), as well as a frequent string quartet (Martina Drakulić, Lovro Kovačević, Lara Silvestri, Petar Haluza), harp (Hana Paraušić), vibraphone (Šimun Matišić), and multiple vocal soloists (Valerija Nikolovska, Kristijan Beluhan, Mario Huljev, Ivona Šimunić, Nikola Marjanović, Ivana Husar Mlinac, Lu Jakelić, Željka Veverec, Sanja Doležal, Nikolina Kovačević, Maja Rivić).

Depending on the programme, the lineup can include up to twenty musicians, enabling rich, orchestrated performances that push the boundaries of typical tribute concerts in both genre and format.

Homage Collective’s repertoire spans a wide range of artists and styles. Their thirteen programmes to date have included tributes to Roy Ayers, Chaka Khan, Jamiroquai, Brazilian music, Curtis Mayfield, and Jimi Tenor—who travelled from Finland to perform with the ensemble. They have also paid tribute to Arsen Dedić, attended by members of the Dedić family, Matija and Lu Dedić. This was followed by tributes to Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, and the iconic compilation album Lagano, lagano, which brought together bands such as Cubismo, Bastardz, Songkillers, Jinx and many others. More recent programmes have focused on Alfi Kabiljo and the Soulquarians, while the current homage to Sade Adu has seen exceptionally high demand across concert venues in Croatia.
