Night of Fortresses Goes Green at St. John's Fortress

Night of Fortresses Goes Green introduces a new eco-conscious dimension this year, bringing diverse programming to all three of Šibenik’s land fortresses on Saturday, May 9th.

This year’s edition introduces a new challenge – raising awareness among visitors about sustainable tourism and eco-friendly practices, encouraging active participation in environmental protection, and promoting cultural heritage as a key component of sustainable development. The program will take place simultaneously at numerous historic sites across Europe. The full schedule is available on the official event website: nightoffortresses.org.

St. John’s Fortress

During the Night of Fortresses, St. John’s Fortress will offer a wide variety of content for all ages – from fun games and workshops for children, to educational and recreational activities for adults, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and community engagement.

"Capture the Flag" is the name of a children’s game for elementary school students, who will search for puzzle pieces that reveal the flag’s location. The fastest team will win an eco-friendly prize! The game starts at 11 AM at St. John’s Fortress. The number of participants is limited – register by emailing info@kucaarsen.hr.

At 5 PM, St. John’s Fortress will host a presentation of the “Ajmo lokalno” initiative, which connects local communities through culture, heritage, and sustainable development, and invites citizens to take an active role in protecting their living space. Admission is free.

At 7 PM, on the fortress's star-shaped bastion, sunset yoga led by Divina Yoga studio will begin. Participants will experience the fortress in a whole new way – through guided open-air yoga. The program is open to everyone aged 15 and older. The number of spots is limited, and registration is required via info@kucaarsen.hr.

In cooperation with the Stribor Association, the fortress will host Night at the Fortress – the first children’s sleepover at St. John’s Fortress. Participants (children aged 7 to 14) will spend the night under the stars in tents, within a safe and special setting. The program includes ecology- and heritage-themed workshops, evening film screenings, stargazing, and overnight camping, all under professional supervision. For registration and information, contact the Stribor Association at peu.stribor@hps.hr.

St. John’s Fortress will be open for free visits from 9 AM to 7 PM.

“Silver Walk” through the Night of Fortresses

A themed guided walking tour will start from Poljana at 5 PM. Designed especially for senior citizens, the tour focuses on sustainable preservation of cultural heritage and the stories that shape Šibenik’s identity. Participation is free for all, but registration is required, either in person at the House of Arts Arsen, by phone at +385 91 619 6009, or via email at info@kucaarsen.hr.

To recap, the Night of Fortresses Goes Green is part of two EU projects implemented by the Šibenik Fortress of Culture:

  • GIFTSnet – Network for Green and Inclusive Fortified Tourism Solutions, funded by the Interreg IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027 program.
  • FORTIC – From Remains of War to the Architecture of Peace in the Cross-Border Area of Italy-Croatia, funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021–2027 program.
