Night of Fortresses Goes Green at Barone Fortress
Night of Fortresses Goes Green introduces a new, eco-conscious component in 2025, and brings a rich program to all three of Šibenik’s land fortresses on Saturday, May 9th.
This year’s edition presents a new challenge – raising awareness among visitors about sustainable tourism and eco-friendly practices, encouraging active participation in environmental protection, and promoting cultural heritage as a key element of sustainable development. The program will take place simultaneously at numerous historic sites across Europe, and a full schedule of events is available on the official website: nightoffortresses.org.
Barone Fortress
As part of the Night of Fortresses Goes Green 2025, Barone Fortress will offer a special program for children and adults, focusing on education, heritage, and cultural togetherness.
The children's play titled “The Adventures of Đuro the Shrimp”, which carries an ecological message, will start at 6:30 PM at Barone Fortress. The play is suitable for children aged 5 and up, and admission is free.
Following the performance, at 7:30 PM, Barone Fortress will host the premiere presentation of the Lexicon of Croatian Fortresses. This comprehensive publication offers, for the first time, an overview of medieval and early modern fortifications across the territory of the Republic of Croatia from 476 to 1606. The presentation of the Lexicon contributes to the understanding and promotion of Croatia’s rich fortified heritage through an accessible yet academically grounded format. Admission is free.
Visitors can also explore Barone Fortress throughout the day, as entry will be free of charge from 9 AM to 9 PM.
To recap, the Night of Fortresses Goes Green is part of two EU projects implemented by the Šibenik Fortress of Culture:
- GIFTSnet – Network for Green and Inclusive Fortified Tourism Solutions, funded by the Interreg IPA Croatia – Bosnia and Herzegovina – Montenegro 2021–2027 program.
- FORTIC – From Remains of War to the Architecture of Peace in the Cross-Border Area of Italy-Croatia, funded by the Interreg Italy-Croatia 2021–2027 program.
